Services markets at work

The US Army has come under fierce crit­i­cism from aid agen­cies and from their British allies for ‘sell­ing water’ to poor peo­ple in Umm Qasr (Iraq). If this report is accu­rate, the accu­sa­tion are just the usu­al igno­rance about how ser­vices mar­kets work.

Under the deal, the mil­i­tary will pro­vide water free to locals with access to tanker trucks, who then will be allowed to sell the water for a rea­son­able fee.
